Art and History
What to see in Syracuse
Allegroitalia Syracuse Ortigia is located inside the island of Ortigia, the historic center of Syracuse – city founded between 734 and 733 BC from the Corinthians. Opposite our structure are the remains of Mikvé (or Mikveh): a Jewish purification bath. It is the oldest of all European Synagogues, dating back to the 6th century AD, is still intact and visited every day.
What to see
Inside the island of Ortigia and a few meters from the property you can visit:
The Cathedral, that before the advent of Christianity played the role of sacred temple of the polis of Syrakousai, dedicated to Athena (Minerva)
The small church of Santa Lucia Alla Badia, Patronum of Syracuse, where you can admire the work of Caravaggio “The burial of Saint Lucia”. The patronal feast of Saint Lucia is celebrated on December 13th
Fonte Aretusa, a source of fresh water in which the papyrus grows and on which there is a famous legend
Maniace Castle, wanted by Frederick II of Swabia during the reign of the two Sicilies and built on a Greek fortification
A few meters from our structure there is the small pebble beach of Cala Rossa, accessible via stairs where there is a public shower
Behind the main entrance of the structure you can access a communal solarium where there is a public shower
Just 100 meters from the hotel, still in the old Jewish quarter of the Giudecca where the hotel is located, we find the church of San Giovanni Battista (San Giovannello), synagogue converted into a Christian church that lost its roof during the bombing of the second world war. Today it is a completely open church.
Piazza Archimede with the Diana Fountain
Ruins of the temple of Apollo
The Theater, the laboratory and the Pupi museum
Ortygia market stage of colors and a place of folklore and unique flavors
The north-western part of the modern city, just 2.5 km from Ortigia, can be reached in just 10 minutes thanks via taxi, which will allow guests of Allegroitalia Siracusa Ortigia to easily reach the area. Here you can visit:

Interesting to visit the Sanctuary of the Madonnina delle Lacrime (containing the painting of the Madonnina that miraculously cried in 1953)
The Church of San Giovanni alle Catacombe, with its catacombs and San Marciano Crypt
The Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum is one of the largest archaeological museums in Europe
In the North-Eastern part of the city you can visit the Capuchins’ Latomie, which as the word says, coming from the Greek, was in principle a place that provided for centuries the material for the construction of the city of Syracuse, of which it represents one of the more specific testimonies of its millennial history.
Within the district of the township we can find the church and the catacombs of Santa Lucia.
Finally, the city of Syracuse is located a few kilometers from the capital of Baroque architecture: Noto; from the natural reserve of Vendicari, from the Rock Necropolis of Pantalica, from the Plemmirio Park, from the Papyrus and Fonte Ciane museum and from the Cavagrande Nature Reserve.
